Driving Through Europe This Summer: Vignettes, Tolls and Essential Rules
A summer road trip through Europe means great scenery and plenty of flexibility, but crossing several countries also means dealing with different motorway payment systems.
Sorting your tolls and vignettes out before departure makes the journey considerably easier.
Check every country on your route
Don't focus only on your final destination — transit countries matter too.
Drive through Austria, Czechia, Hungary, Slovenia, or another vignette country on the way to your destination, and you may need valid motorway access even if you're only there for a few hours.
Check your license plate twice
Digital vignettes are typically tied to your vehicle registration information, so a simple typing error can cause problems if your vehicle gets checked.
Before paying, verify:
- License plate number
- Country of registration
- Vehicle category
- Start date
- Validity period
Vignette doesn't always mean everything is included
Certain countries charge separately for specific tunnels, bridges, or motorway sections.
Austria, for example, has separate section tolls on several Alpine routes in addition to its standard motorway vignette.
Before a long summer journey, check the complete route rather than relying only on your destination.
