Austria Is Going Fully Digital: What Changes for Vignettes After 2026

The familiar sticker attached to the windscreen disappears.

Instead, motorway authorization is handled entirely digitally, meaning drivers no longer need to attach a sticker or remove an old one from the windscreen.

The Austrian government says more than 75% of annual vignettes were already digital when the transition was announced, so the shift is really an extension of an existing trend rather than a completely new system.

Nothing changes for existing 2026 products.

Both the 2026 adhesive vignette and the 2026 digital vignette remain valid according to their applicable validity periods. The 2026 annual vignette itself runs through January 31, 2027.

For trips in 2026, simply follow the current Austrian vignette rules.

For travel from the 2027 vignette year onward, drivers should expect to use the digital system — digital vignettes will still be available through physical distribution points as Austria transitions away from the physical sticker.

For travellers, that means no windscreen sticker, and a vignette tied directly to the vehicle's registration details.
