Digital Vignettes in Europe: Which Countries Require One in 2026?
There's no single vignette covering the whole of Europe, which is a big part of why motorway payment systems here can feel confusing.
Austria, Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Romania, and Bulgaria all operate vignette-based systems for eligible vehicles on designated roads, and Switzerland runs a motorway vignette system too.
How digital vignettes work
Electronically, the vignette is generally linked to your vehicle's license plate. When buying one, you select your vehicle information, registration country, validity period, and start date.
Once it's active, there's no need to stop at a toll booth each time you enter a covered motorway.
One country does not mean one rule
Every country runs its own system — validity periods, prices, vehicle classifications, and motorway coverage can all differ.
A vignette bought for Austria, for example, won't get you onto Slovenian or Hungarian motorways, so a multi-country road trip may require several separate products.
Plan before crossing the border
Check every country on your route before departure, including any you're only passing through.
Also watch for tunnels, bridges, and special motorway sections that may carry separate tolls. A few minutes spent checking your route beforehand can prevent confusion later.
